I’ve been doing some holiday baking this week for my friends, annnd by baking I mean homemade dog treats, and by friends I mean my dog.
That counts, right?
How To Make Our Homemade Dog Treats:
I am 100% not the type of person who makes food for their dog, except for that right now, this exact very minute, I am that person. !!! I do not even know myself anymore. Making my own dog treats? Honestly. File under Things You Said You’d Never Do That Now Bring You a Weird Amount of Great Joy.
Something about the holidays and the music and the snow and cuddly Sage in a French blue striped turtleneck sweater just got to me, and in a moment of Christmas miraculousness, I became that person that I always rolled my eyes at. A little pumpkin, a little peanut butter, and a little whole wheat flour later, and we were in dog treat business.
Thankfully, Sage doesn’t have any special allergies or dietary needs, so there’s really no reason for me to make her homemade dog treats other than the fact that I love her something fierce and needed a break from cookies for a minute. But conveniently, this homemade dog treats recipe makes a TON and we know lots of other neighbor-ly dogs who can and will appreciate a little gift bag of soft-baked, peanut butter and bacon glazed homemade dog treats.
That drizzle, though. I mean, daaaaang.

Homemade Dog Treats
- Total Time: 35 minutes
- Yield: 30-ish large dog treats 1x
Description
Get your baking on with these cute dog treats and over-the-top bacon glaze! Your pup will thank you!
Ingredients

Dog biscuits:
- 1 cup pumpkin
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup oil*
- 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
Glaze:
- 2 tablespoons bacon grease, coconut oil, chicken fat, or any other fat that will solidify at room temperature, melted
- 1/4 cup smooth peanut butter
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Combine pumpkin, peanut butter, eggs, and oil in a bowl. Add in baking soda and whole wheat flour. Stir until a stiff dough forms. Knead dough or mix just until flour is incorporated.
- Roll out dough with a rolling pin and use a cookie cutter to cut out dog bone shapes, or just bake into little circles like cookies. Bake for 15 minutes.
- Whisk the bacon grease and peanut butter until very smooth. Drizzle over the treats and cool till glaze hardens (it does best in the fridge or freezer).
Notes
We just used a basic canola oil, but we also give Sage coconut oil for her fur/skin, and I think coconut oil would work nicely here. You can also use coconut oil in place of the bacon grease in the glaze, but, I mean, come on. It’s bacon grease. SO YUMMY.
Thank you to the readers who have mentioned the issue with using bacon fat for dogs. A trace amount of bacon grease (two tablespoons divided amongst 30 biscuits = less than 1 gram of bacon fat per serving) shouldn’t be a concern. Of course, we’re not veterinarians over here, so please check with your vet or use an alternative type of oil if you are concerned.

How long will these keep? At room temp tightly sealed? I am definitely making these for my family’s dogs! They all have stockings at our family gathering and these will be perfect!
I know! This is the perfect dog gift. My mother in law just adopted a yellow lab, my mom has a terrior and we have 2 dachshunds. Everybody has a dog and everybody seems to spoil said dog.
Ok here goes my female bully had puppies I love them all unfortunately I can’t keep them all, i have 2 female’s left. For those not familiar with bullys go to YouTube and I promise you will have a companion and a babysitter for life. Thnx
We keep them in the fridge or freezer cause the glaze softens and gets a little oily at room temp. So, in the freezer, I don’t know, I feel like they’d sort of last forever. 😂
Mine molded left out, my daughter told me to refrigerate.
When I kept the ones I made out of the fridge they went mouldy pretty quick, and I had to throw them out but when kept in the fridge they lasted until out dog had eaten them all ( about a month). Our dog loves them!
I’ve never made these before, however we just learned of the cancer causing ingredients in our Molly’s favorite treat…Pupperoni’s. Wish me luck!! lol
Oh and add turmeric. Tons of natural stuff u can add in them.

I’d been making dog cookies for years. Since there are no preservatives, you have to refrigerate or they’ll mold. Learned the hard way.
Just curious on having to keep them refrigerator..how in the world do people sell these at outdoor events without them being ruined?
diana: I would maybe put them prepackaged in baggies in a cooler with some ice, you can even get those disposable styrofoam coolers!
I am definitely gonna try this one. I have a brand new rescue. I beg you to Please do not use STYROFOAM ever, for anything!! If you take time to make healthy treats, please do not destroy the planet by even buying styrofoam. Use a real cooler.
Hi, how would I ship these to someone? I made them for a friends dog but didn’t think about them spoiling!
Because we dont put a glaze on them, and cook them longer so they are dried out. Last over a year if kept dry

My doggo loves these more than anything on earth…well besides me ;). I don’t glaze, cook slightly longer and have never had to refrigerate them. I make half batch at a time and cut them into 1×1 pieces and usually end up with around 120 cookies. He’s a senior dog so I also add in CBD oil for him. I’ve used pumpkin, banana, apples, zucchini…he loves them all 😀
How do you roll out this dough with a roller?? It was so sticky on first roll and made a mess. What step am I missing here? I ended up just dropping dough on cookie sheet and baking.
Hi, Doreen! The dough should be stiff after step 2, but when rolling it out, you could try adding a bit more flour to help if it’s sticky.

Well that’s one doggie treat that would definitely be for just the dog!! I have a goat, a horse and two miniature donkeys that think they are dogs when I’m giving treats to the dog. However, that is not reciprocated by the dog. She has absolutely no interest in livestock treats. Except apples. She’s been known to steal their apples.

Gemma: I do not know the answer to your question, but I thought I would share with you that I know a few people who regularly give their dogs pumpkin to keep their bowels regular. As far as sensitive stomachs, I have no idea. I would check with your vet on that. The peanut butter may be a concern.

I pkan to make these with a combo of rolled oats and oat flour. I think its better for dogs than wheat.
I would love to make these for my dogs! We feed our dogs a raw diet, but unfortunately our Miniature Schnauzer ended up getting pancreatitis (they are prone to it) because of too much fat in his diet. Now, he’s still on raw – just a lower fat diet, but we can’t give him any treats like this anymore – no matter how awesome they sound. Our other dog would LOVE these though. 😉

My mini schnauzer went through the same thing. We ended up Giving her baby carrots & cubed apples as treats. She loved them!!
We have to other pups now. They will dig these!!
I do the same and also raw green beans and watermellon. He loves all of this and I do give him a few buscuits that are pumpkin, natural organic peanut butter and barley/or rice flour. He had pancreatis very bad too and I have been making his dog food, brown rice, green beans, carrots, peas, chicken thighs, little broccoli/spinch and he loves it.

Can you just add the bacon grease or chips of bacon into the recipe and forget about the glaze?
Please note, baby carrots are not good for man or beast! Read up on how baby carrots are made/processed. BLEACH is used.
Unfortunately bleach ad well as arsnic is used in almost everything its also in bottled water.
Things can be safely treated with a very dilute chlorine solution to kill off bacteria – chlorine bleach is not bad for you if it is used sparingly to sanitize, for example with the water most of us drink.
And after baby carrots are rinsed in the solution, they are rinsed in regular water.
One of my chihuahuas is crazy about raw carrots, big or small! She treats a carrot just like a prize bone and devours it ASAP. She also loves chunks of cabbage and lettuce ribs, as well as delish dog treats. Thanks for this recipe—will make these today!

LOL, I did not! They look appetizing in the picture but they weren’t super appetizing (for humans) in real life. Too crunchy / dense and not enough flavor. 🙂

If one were to live in a place where pumpkin puree was impossible to find (*raises hand*), I take it butternut squash would work ok, right? This post totally cracked me up! Mainly because I have been thinking of making little pup treats for 2 weeks now. I’ve been hooked on Diane’s Gingie cookies (see OvenHug for the best gingie recipe eh=vah) and making them non-stop. Our finicky little chihuahua mix loves sharing bites with me. I want to make a gluten free version of my gingies so that our senior pup, Oscar can also join us – he has sensitive tummy issues. My friend made some treats my dogs love and she used molasses, flour, peanut butter , eggs and no drizzle. Is molasses safe for them?
Making these today. They are soft after 15-16 mins. I did flip them over half way. If they are soft assume they have a limited shelf life? Do u know how long just in an airtight container. Worried they will get moisture in fridge.
2. Anyone bake longer to dry them out? If so how long? Did u turn off oven and leave in pr let it bake at 350 and how long did it take to dry out?
Hi, Jackie! We’ve kept them in the fridge for a few weeks (or even longer at times) and they last a very long time when stored in the freezer. The treats are a little bit softer, but it’s possible they might need a bit more time in the oven – everyone’s ovens run a bit differently. Hope your pup loves these!
