Mind-Blowing Vegan Chocolate Pie: putting stars in my chocolate-loving eyes since July 2017.

This magic is creamy, rich, smooth like the best chocolate pudding-meets-mousse-meets-chocolate-pots-de-creme of your life. It’s not icy or weirdly textured at all, as many alternative-type frozen desserts can be. And there’s no milk in it. Or cream. Or anything dairy-like. But there’s also no scary vegan ingredients – it’s just all things you could buy at your regular grocery store. My favorite kind of recipe.

How To Make Our Vegan Chocolate Pie:

This no-bake vegan chocolate pie only requires five ingredients! Kinda like a French Silk Pie, but better for you. Vegan / Dairy Free / Gluten Free | pinchofyum.com

Things that make this a Mind-Blowing Vegan Chocolate Pie:

  • 5 Ingredients.
  • No Bake.
  • TASTES LIKE HEAVEN IN A PIE CRUST.
  • We could stop there.
  • But we could also keep going:
  • Tofu. Let’s just get that out of the way right now. Everything else in this short ingredient line-up is going to be cool with you, and then you’re going to see tofu and you’re going to doubt me. I see you, Doubter. I am a doubter myself, and I pinky promise that you will eat this and think zero thoughts about tofu. I love tofu in this chocolate pie because it acts as a thick, creamy base that blends together easily, but the flavor is almost completely neutral. Smooth, creamy perfection.
  • Obvi, chocolate and more chocolate. Chocolate chips are a major player here, and did you know there is such a thing as vegan (dairy free) chocolate chips? I used Ghirardelli chocolate chips here because I’m a chocolate snob and just a casual, part-time vegan so I’ll take my real-deal chocolate TYVM, but I have purchased and used dairy free chocolate chips in the past and can vouch for their existence.
  • Wrapping up the mind-blowing element is a little bit of almond love. Just scoop some almond butter in that blender to get a buttery texture, and leave the smoothing-out part to the chocolate almondmilk.

Yummy, Yummy, YUMMY.

One thing to know about this vegan chocolate pie is that, um, it’s mind-blowing.

Another thing to know: sometimes I keep the chocolate filling in jars and eat it for breakfast. DON’T EVEN JUDGE ME and I’m not actually joking.

I have made a variation of the chocolate pie filling that used cocoa powder + maple syrup in place of the chocolate chips, and let’s be honest: it was not nearly as delicious as this version I’m giving you here with a full bag of chocolate chips worked in, but it was a little more along the lines of a healthy breakfast, and I found out (surprise surprise) that I loved eating the equivalent of cold, thick, creamy chocolate pudding for breakfast every morning. Top with bananas! Top with peanut butter! Berries! Seeds! Granola! I have a thing about hot oats in the summer (thing being – I don’t like to eat them) so having something cold and sweet and mostly-good-for-you waiting for me in the fridge each morning was one of my favorite things about making this pie.

Clearly, the emphasis here is on the filling. Is it a malt? a shake? a pudding? a breakfast bowl? or mind-blowing vegan chocolate pie filling? That’s the beauty – it’s sort of all of the above. It’s a back-pocket, use-it-however-you-want chocolate pie recipe situation.

Okay, in terms of topping?

Whipped cream would be pretty French Silky Awesome of you, and you can swap with coconut whipped cream for the true vegans. You could do chocolate shavings… dust it with cocoa powder… I may have piled peanut butter cups high on top of one of my pies in the name of “recipe testing”….

But honestly, can you really go wrong with a pinch of sea salt?

I’m really just obsessed with this minimal chocolate pie beauty.

No cooking or baking, no fancy toppings, and just a short list of simple ingredients.

This is my kinda chocolate pie. ❤

Mind-Blowing Vegan Chocolate Pie

  • Author: Lindsay
  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 10 slices 1x

Description

This vegan chocolate pie is a five-ingredient, no-bake miracle. The ultra-thick and creamy chocolate pie filling is made with (wait for it)… tofu, almond butter, almondmilk, and melted chocolate. Easy!

Ingredients

Scale

For the chocolate pie filling:

For the Crust:

  • pie crust of your choice! ideas in the notes section.

Instructions

  1. Chocolate Pie Filling: Blend the tofu, almondmilk, and almond butter until smooth. Melt the chocolate chips. Add to the blender and blend until smooth – it gets pretty thick so you might need to help it along with a spatula between blends.
  2. Chocolate Pie Assembly: Pour filling into a crust, sprinkle with sea salt if you want, and chill for 12-24 hours. Cut and serve!

Notes

*For strict vegans, use dairy-free/vegan chocolate chips – we found them at stores like Whole Foods.

We used chocolate almondmilk and it was deeeelicious. Bonus: the leftover milk sitting in my fridge has become my new favorite morning drink of choice.

Crust ideas: my favorite is a graham cracker crust, and unless I’m missing something major, it looks like most  of the store-bought ones are vegan because they use oils instead of butter! Online forums support my findings, but if you know something I don’t, feel free to comment. I also love the idea of an Oreo crust or a regular pie crust, which you can make with coconut oil to be vegan. Also: a date and nut crust could be nice.

I am not a vegan, but as a challenge I made a delicious mango chocolate cake for a guest post not long ago. Since then I find vegan recipes fascinating. I would probably replace the almond butter with peanut butter, but other than that it looks divine! Will have to check this out.

    1. Pinch of Yum Logo

I’m with you on the peanut butter replacing the almond butter. I made it with the almond and for me that’s the flavor I’m really picking up on when I eat it. Seems like peanut butter and chocolate go together better.

      1. Pinch of Yum Logo

This recipe is bomb! I made it with coconut milk instead of almond and no almond butter. It’s rich, chocolatey and so damn creamy. The first time I tried this pie I had no idea it was vegan and my friend told me he made it with a bag of chocolate chips and a block of tofu 🤯. I haven’t been vegan in a looooong time and this is an all around amazing chocolate mouse pie!!!

        1. Pinch of Yum Logo

Thanks for suggesting a non-nut option. Not a huge fan of almonds and try to bake nut free in case I have friends who are nut allergic. Good to know that coconut milk and no almond butter would work…might also think about using chocolate sunflower seed butter.

      2. Pinch of Yum Logo

Guittard brand semi-sweet chocolate chips and their super cookie chips are vegan and can be found in Vons, Target, etc. I’ve done a lot of taste testing and they are my favorite!

  2. Pinch of Yum Logo

Thank you so much for posting this!! I am always looking for simple not-scary vegan dessert recipes!!! I cannot wait to try this.

  3. Pinch of Yum Logo

I’ve always been a little wary of tofu in desserts (I usually go the blended cashew route for creams) – but this sounds promising! I’ll have to try it out.

  4. Pinch of Yum Logo

Vegan chocolate pie made with tofu has been around FOREVER. Why are you not citing where you adapted the recipe from?

    1. Pinch of Yum Logo

Things like pastas with tomato sauces have been around “FOREVER” too. Banana breads, chocolate cakes, and chocolate chip cookies aren’t exactly original ideas at this point. Are people supposed to cite every single place that they see a recipe even remotely similar to their own? Maybe she didn’t actually adapt this recipe from anyone. Maybe Lindsay’s method and measurements for this recipe are different enough from others that she has seen that it didn’t warrant a notice of adaptation. Instead of accusing someone of stealing or plagiarizing, take a second or two to realise that you’re going to be pretty hard pressed to find recipes done that have not been found anywhere ever before. Food for thought.

Alice is not trolling. If anything you are trolling. I don’t understand the need to define ownership. Knowledge is knowledge. Spread love. Why restrict it from its power over petty ass rules?
On a side note . This looks delicious. Im joining my redneck neighbors for christmas >.< and I'm looking for recipes that won't terrify them. QUESTION!! Does it need to be silken tofu? I really don't like buying from walmart and I don't want to travel an hour to another store? Please respond ASAP

        1. Pinch of Yum Logo

Def want to make this. Question- what kind of chocolate chips did u use? Semi sweet or bittersweet? Thanks!

    2. Pinch of Yum Logo

Oh, please. This recipe is as ubiquitous as a recipe for pimento cheese or chocolate milk. I don’t know a vegetarian who hasn’t made it from memory for decades. So she posted it for people just discovering the wonders of tofu? So what?

      1. Pinch of Yum Logo

I’m vegan, and I haven’t managed to make a tofu pudding pie..though I want to! But I couldn’t make it without a recipe as I don’t make pies that often.

      2. Pinch of Yum Logo

Love this recipe. I use it as my base and have made modifications (almond vs peanut butter or firm vs extra firm) and it always turns put well. When in a hurry I make a crustless minis in a muffin pan and use a variety of toppings. Even my dairy loving, non vegan friends love it.

  5. Pinch of Yum Logo

I want to make this as soon as I get home from work!!! Out of curiosity, if someone has issues with soy…do you have any substitution ideas for the tofu? Looks so delicious.

    1. Pinch of Yum Logo

Hmm, I mean, a lot of people make chocolate things with black beans and stuff like that, but I can’t personally vouch for that working here. If you find something to sub that works well, I’d love to hear! 🙂

        1. Pinch of Yum Logo

Avocado is great for chocolate pudding! It may be harder to make the texture harder like in tofu…

        2. Pinch of Yum Logo

My blender is broken 😫😫… can I just use a mixer? … can you tell I’m not an experienced baker?

          1. Pinch of Yum Logo

Unfortunately, I don’t think a mixer will work, unless it’s able to puree ingredients! A food processor would be a good backup!

          2. Pinch of Yum Logo

            Hi Rebecca,
I’ve made this recipe many times in my blender, but today I didn’t have one and made it in a KitchenAid standing mixer. Came out just as good! You really have to crank it up (I went all the way to 10) and pause every minute or so to scrape down the sides. Hope that helps!

    2. Pinch of Yum Logo

Boil or steam a couple of white sweet potatoes and use them instead- I’ve had great results in mousses, etc. It has a bit more of a dense consistency than I think this will, but still super scrumptious and nutritious. You may want to use less of the chocolate almond milk though, or add it slowly until you hit the right consistency. Also, you could probably do this pie with a coconut mousse filling instead. I think we’re all on the brink of some delicious experimenting!

    3. Pinch of Yum Logo

You can use coconut cream-just whip it up a fold in the chocolate and almond butter. Or you can soak cashews in water overnight and purée it in a blender then add the rest of the ingredients

    4. Pinch of Yum Logo

Cheryl and Sommer ! You can substitute with 1 cup of cashews soaked in water until plump and 2 tablespoons of the full fat from coconut milk in a can 🙂 At least that’s what I would use if I could not use tofu 🙂

  6. Pinch of Yum Logo

Thanks Lindsay for great looking vegan recipe! For easy vegan crust, I recommend JoeJoes cookies from TraderJoes. Use 2 rows (approx 28) cookies, blend them with 1/4 cup melted vegan butter, and press into pie pan. TJ’s chocolate chips are also vegan.

    1. Pinch of Yum Logo

I think you’d be fine. I never ate it before 12 hours (other than in jars) and for clean slices you might need more time. But messy slices can still taste good. 🙂

      1. Pinch of Yum Logo

The longer set the better as a slice of pie, but if you’re short on time, why not bring out your little ramekins and scoop your filling into it and crumble your “pie crust” on top, just enjoy a few raspberries, slices of ripe sweet dripping mangos, or crumbled JoeJoe cookies-yum or even whipped stevia or maple syrup sweetened coconut cream! Serve as individual desserts. The options are up to your creative minds.

  7. Pinch of Yum Logo

Mind officially blown! Added tofu to my grocery list and will make this baby this weekend! Can hardly wait to taste that silky goodness and to see the shock on my husband’s face after I reveal the secret ingredient!!

  8. Pinch of Yum Logo

Welp. My boyfriend is moving away for a job in a week and this will be JUST the thing to make me feel better. And STAHP with the oreo crust. Def doing that! All I need is a fork! Thanks Lindsay 🙂

  9. Pinch of Yum Logo

Oh, how I wish my doctor hadn’t told me to get off chocolate… I would definitely trust you with the silken tofu.

  10. Pinch of Yum Logo

LOL – i just snorted my coffee after reading this line:

Another thing to know: sometimes I keep the chocolate filling in jars and eat it for breakfast. DON’T EVEN JUDGE ME and I’m not actually joking.

I love your recipes, but to be honest, I love your humor just as much!

    1. Pinch of Yum Logo

Hmm, I kinda doubt it because there aren’t any eggs or anything… Seems like it might just dry out? But if you try it, let us know! 🙂

  11. Pinch of Yum Logo

I’ve honestly never heard of nor seen anything like this a day in my life. I have to tell on myself. Recently, I’ve been going haywire like Girls gone wild munching away on donuts from Dunkin donuts and feel so guilty. I had Apple crumb, Jelly, White Vanilla creme, and a few free donuts D & D’s on 52nd and Lancaster Avenue in Philadelphia passed off to me during midnight hours. I munched away because I wanted to avoid satisfying my hunger by eating Mickey D’s. Only if there was vegetarian fast food restaurants open after midnight in America, people would make healthier choices and eat delicious and nutritious stuff like this mouth wateringly deliciously looking Vegan Chocolate pie.

    1. Pinch of Yum Logo

Sounds like a good business plan… I mean… you could eat and run a business.. just saying 🙂 get inspired

  12. Pinch of Yum Logo

the almond ingredients, that’s more preference than science, yes? it’ll probably be good with sunflower butter and coconut milk? and a GF joejoe’s crust? yes? (plz say yes)
